Phthalates
What are Phthalates?
Phthalates are a set of chemicals that make plastic more durable, soft, and flexible. One of the most commonly used phthalates is diethyl phthalate (DEP), which enables fragrances to become soluble.

Are Phthalates “good”?
Definitely not. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors in both humans and aquatic life and can even lower the production of testosterone. Studies have found that prenatal exposure to phthalates can decrease mental and motor development in children.
What kind of products are made with Phthalates?
Phthalates are often found in hundreds of products such as toys, detergents, household cleaners, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, particularly in fragrances for candles, shampoos, soaps, and perfumes. Since rubber contains phthalates, they can even be found in sex toys, so beware!
Are there certifications I should look out for?
While no specific certification exists, you can look out for ‘fragrance-free’ labels and ‘no phthalates’ labels to avoid these chemicals.
