Our Methodology

HOW WE EVALUATE PRODUCTS

Don't let our bright, charming exterior fool you. Behind the scenes, our small but mighty team is sifting through peer-reviewed academic papers, government reports, and third-party certifications to make sure you get accurate insights on whatever impacts your everyday life the most.

We analyze both company-level and product-level data, municipal laws and political news, paired with the latest studies and articles that help inform what it means to live sustainably. For us, that means living in a way that meets our needs but doesn’t negatively impact the needs of future generations.

WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST US

We independently verify and recommend products without any ulterior motives. Our business model only makes money from subscribers (so please subscribe!), which makes it easy for us to evaluate products holistically instead of being influenced by advertisers.

Secondly, our founder Lizzie has been studying sustainability since 2004 when she lived off the grid and learned about energy and food independence. She majored in Environmental Studies, worked at the Natural Resources Defense Council, and received her Masters of Environmental Management and MBA at Yale University. While working at Unilever, Lizzie saw firsthand how products are manufactured and transported across the country. She is a sustainability expert in the field, being featured on the Today Show, Katie Couric Media, Fast Company, and more.

Finally, Finch has lived several lives in the past 5 years. We originally launched Finch as a proprietary algorithm, evaluating thousands of products and assigning them sustainability scores. We gathered a team of brilliant scientists and data experts to comb through big troughs of data and thoroughly research products and companies. Although we have pivoted from a scaled tech-startup to a consumer resource hub, we reference our extensive research whenever it's applicable.
